Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Caucasian War

Share

On May 21, we remember all the victims of the Caucasian War, which brought irreparable losses to the Abkhaz-Adyghe people. Back in 1864, our ancestors had to leave their native lands and go into exile.

From 1763 to 1864, Russian troops tried to conquer the Caucasus.

On May 21, 1864, General P. V. Grabbe held a military parade in the Kbaada tract (Krasnaya Polyana) in honor of the victory over the mountain peoples. Hundreds of thousands of highlanders were forced to leave their native lands and seek refuge in the Ottoman Empire and neighboring states. By 1877, 19 thousand Abkhazians remained in their homeland. The lands from the Ingur River to Anapa fell into complete desolation.
