Yuri Nikolaevich Voronov - Russian archaeologist, a researcher at the prehistoric, ancient and medieval antiquities of Abkhazia and Sochi. Voronov come from an ancient Russian family living in Abkhazia and 60-ies of the XIX century. Yuri Nikolaevich was born in Abkhazia, Tsabal village". His first archaeological expedition was at the age 4 years - he was involved in the excavations of burial grounds of Apsils on the estate. At age 13 he gave his first archaeological collection to the Abkhazian State Museum and participated in the excavation of the castle of Bagrat in Sukhum. From 1960 to 1965 Voronov studied Egyptology at the Faculty of Oriental Studies Department of the Leningrad State University. In 1964, as a student, he created an archaeological map of ancient Tsebelda. After returning home he worked in the Abkhazian Council of protection of cultural monuments in Sukhum Tourism Research Institute, he participated in various archaeological expeditions. After defending his doctoral dissertation at the History Department of Moscow State University in 1971, Yuri Nikolaevich worked in the Abkhazian Institute of Language, Literature and History, a senior fellow at the Department of Archaeology. Historian becomes a politician In the late 80-ies Yuri Nikolaevich becomes active public and political figure. From September 1989 to August 1992 Voronov was - co-founder and co-chairman of the Sukhum society of internationalists. He created a newspaper "Sukhum Bulletin", which published his articles. In 1991, Yuri Nikolaevich was elected deputy of the Supreme Council of the Republic. From March 1992 to December 1993 he was led by the Permanent Commission of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Abkhazia on Human Rights and Ethnic Relations. During the War of the people of Abkhazia in 1992-1993 scientist led the fight for greater information Abkhazia. During the war, Yuri Nikolayevich was published more than 100 articles, interviews, documents and notes. Voronov enounced all the world the truth about the atrocities of the Georgian occupation authorities by writing a "White Book of Abkhazia" - documentary about the genocide of the Abkhazian people. After the war, Yuri Nikolaevich was appointed Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Abkhazia, and in 1995 - the vice-premier. He was in charge of culture and social security, was responsible for relations with civil society organizations. Voronov performed diplomatic missions, representing Abkhazia at the multilateral negotiations on settlement of the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict. In 1994, the Voronov established the Congress of Russian Communities, where he became a co-chairman. At the same time he became Professor of History of Russia and foreign countries at the Abkhaz State University. Yuri Voronov was killed in September 1995, is buried at the walls of the Abkhazian State museum in Sukhum. His name one of the streets named in Sukhum.
